Description

In his early twenties and slender of build, with athletic muscles that indicate a life of physical labor, Jaecar stands at a height of about six feet. Sun-licked pale skin hugs the length of his form, stretching over his broad forehead, middling cheekbones and ovular chin. A shock of blondish brown hair crowns his head, the sides kept short and the top left to grow a little longer. Straight blonde brows stand over a pair of startling slate blue eyes.His nose is just the tiniest bit wide and long and looks to have seen it's share of fights, coming out only a little worse for the wear. Lips are a pale pink, wide and soft, the edges naturally sitting in the faintest curl of a smile.

Jaecar's clothing is functional. Light colored materials accommodate the heat. Patched and useless sailcloth has been re-fashioned into a pair of cleverly designed cargo shorts, pockets on the sides of his thighs and at the waist. His belt is cracked leather and a well-worn dark brown. The shorts are tucked into a pair of very well worn but obviously once high quality set of boots that flop over at the knee. The sea air isn't kind to such materials. His shirt is a simple white cotton with a lace across a V-neck with a small collar flopping over on itself. The sleeves are rolled up his forearms and there are patches on this article, too. They're cleverly done and of similarly colored material, but patches nonetheless. Over the shirt is a tan vest with a couple small pockets of it's own, buttonable at the front, but worn open. Slung from a loop on his belt is a blade, the other side bearing a beltknife.

History

The sea is in Jaecar's blood. That was the story he'd always been told. Raised by an uncle and aunt at a small seaside holding (One Grain Seahold) that no one important's ever heard of until he was old enough to go to sea with his father and brother, just after his eighth turnday. It was hardly the first time that he'd sailed a boat, but the first time he'd been a true member of the crew. Cabin boy was not a glorious position and much and more welcomed him to the world of the salties, at sea for sometimes turns at a time with seldom stops ashore. Even when they went ashore, the world of the landlubbers held little appeal for him and seemed strange by comparison to the brotherhood one found at sea.

It wasn't all roses, of course. There were lots of men to dislike, but you learned to live with them, when you slept no more than six feet in any direction from every one of them. Jaecar never wanted much for physical things; one doesn't when the only space one has is one easily rooted through and small with naught but a hammock and the contents of that small press to his name. He kept a journal, a set of playing cards, dice, and his ukulele; he'd learned quickly that being the go-to man for entertainment on long voyages can avoid a lot of pain that boredom might otherwise encourage.

Every man on board learned to spar, to take care of themselves and more importantly their cargo. Pirates were not unheard of. They trained with fist, blades, and axes, and tried not to bloody each other up too badly. They had, on board, a flunkie healer who knew enough about first aid to patch most wounds, but serious injury on board was like to be death for a sailor.

Jaecar served aboard the Bollian Beauty with his father and brother until he was fifteen. A rather nasty falling out left him stranded dockside and he set to prowling about for a new ship and crew to take him on. What he learned of life in the port wasn't pretty, and not a life he'd choose for himself. The newly named Guiding Star was signing on sailors. Under the captainage of a SeaCrafter, the ship was to be a trading vessel running a route between Nerat, Keroon, Southern, Ista, Tillek, and High Reaches. It was a large vessel and needed many hands. Jaecar signed on as a topsman and sailor. He took shifts in the crows nest and ran lines in the tops. He proved himself well, for all that he wasn't a Crafter.

When an unexpected Southern storm hit the ship, the Master of the Tops, a crafter, was washed overboard. The captain chose Jaecar, whom the crew had nicknamed "Farsights" owing to his knack for being the first to spot land in the distance. Jaecar "Farsights" lives his life at sea, coming into port when he's the chance and inclination. He is taciturn, but has an easy, shy sort of smile for most folk. He oft brings his ukulele to the tavern in the afternoon (rarely so in the evening when a place is bound to be fuller) and will entertain, casually, but dislikes to attentive an audience.
