- Day 0 - Month 1
Bonding, Oiling, Butchering, and Basic Care
This first month is an adjustment period for you and your dragon. While your new lifemate is not a baby mentally, they are physically, meaning you will have to care for their every need. They will have to be fed by you, bathed by you, oiled by you, their couch mucked by you, every single day-in this first month they will be growing so quickly that they will need these things done two or three times every day. Oiling is vital at this stage, especially, to keep the dragon's hide from itching and cracking as it dries out. After the first few days, you must cut up meat yourself from carcasses supplied for you.
One of the first things you must learn as a weyrling is how to separate yourself from your dragon, to distinguish between their hunger or sleepiness and yours, as otherwise feelings can bleed from one of you to the other. This, plus light calisthenics, will be the primary work of the first month.
For this time period, your primary chore will be taking care of your dragon, which is no easy task. While your dragon is awake, you should be with him; however, when he is asleep, you have the run of the Weyr. This time, however, is not strictly free: you are expected to use that time to take care of your own most important needs, including eating and personal hygiene, as well as the beginnings of physical conditioning for your new life as a rider. You are expected to keep your cot and couch clean and neat; periodic barracks inspections will be taken to ensure this is being handled. Your curfew is ten o'clock, though many won't be able to stay up that late.
There are only two real restrictions on you for now: no sex, and no alcohol. The former is the result of new-hatched dragons' inability to fully understand such feelings; the latter, of a desire to keep all weyrlings operating unhampered by the effects of drinking.
