Description

Six feet tall, solidly built, I'daur is an imposing man. He's well-muscled, with close-cropped steely-grey hair and a good tan that speaks of much time spent outdoors. His face is distinctly masculine, with a strong chin, squared jaw, and straight, prominent nose. Faint lines crease around his mouth and crinkle the corners of his dark blue eyes. I'daur looks fiftyish: a stern frown puts him in the early years of that decade, while his rare smile can subtract at least five from that age.

I'daur has a no-frills sense of fashion. He wears simple long-sleeved work shirts every day, in dull earth tones; in summer or when he's working hard, he usually rolls the sleeves up to his elbows. His pants exemplify well his belief of function over form: they're as plain as his shirts, made of heavy, dark fabrics and generously pocketed for the odds and ends he carries around with him. His shoes are black boots that don't match, not that I'daur seems to care: his belt's black as well, though hidden under the untucked hem of his shirt. Only in the most inclement weather does he throw a beat-up old riding jacket over himself. His knot marks him as a bronzerider and High Reaches' Weyrlingmaster.

I'daur's voice is gruff, deep and rough; it's the sort that carries well and is made for shouting out orders. He also has a tendency to limp on his left leg, more noticeably as the day goes on.

WYSK

• Was the Weyr's resident alcoholic (the most public one, anyway).

• Born, raised, and impressed at High Reaches during the Pass. Two older brothers, both riders. One killed in the Pass, the other in the last comet 'Fall.

• A severe injury during the last Fall of the Pass resulted in I'daur's transfer to Monaco in the South for about ten turns. Zunaeth still doesn't fly quite right, and I'daur limps.

• After returning to HRW, I'daur became weyrlingmaster, after he'd been an assistant at Monaco for turns. In three clutches, he's had weyrlings suffer two severe injuries, one permanent injury, and one betweening death.

• Masterminded the Crom thefts that resulted in the incarceration of some of his former pupils, and was demoted to assistant weyrlingmaster for a time--pretty much for show.

• Eventually killed himself. Went between on day 22, month 13, turn 18 and basically set the precendent for Satiet to eventually commit suicide too.

Relationships

• For about ten turns, until his move to Monaco, he was weyrmated to a greenrider, Anouka. They had two sons together, and while I'daur is close to none of his children, he remained friendly with Anouka, who wa one of the few people who could talk sense to him right up until the end.

• After that, he wasn't been really romantically involved with anybody, although there were rumors about him and Satiet, him and Persie, him and Leova... But little seemed to come of any of those.

• I'daur always played favorites with his weyrlings, from Shanlee to Talien to Leova. N'thei and A'son, better known as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, weren't so much his favorites as just... Faranth only knows. Although he did apparently mastermind them in that whole Crom thievery debacle.

• For a while there, Talien seemed out to get him, after I'daur got her big brother killed in a betweening accident. Eventually, she ended up blinded in a firebreathing accident. I'daur apparently had it in for that family.

• With both his brothers killed in 'Fall, I'daur suicided, and his mother dead some years earlier, I'daur's father is the only member of his family left alive. An older man, formerly a butcher, who now toddles around the lower caverns, Ifraln doesn't really talk about his sons at all, and those who know of them try not to bring them up around him.
