Description
Faryn looks smug by default, at work or at rest, and that's what's easy to notice first. Narrow-faced with dark hair, sharp, interesting features and a smirk that has taken up permanent residence, it is easy to believe she might be enjoying a joke at the expense of whomever or whatever her dark eyes have seen fit to light upon at that particular moment. It can be galling, too, because at five-feet-four, she still somehow manages to carry herself with an air that suggests not only an ability to defend any enjoyment she might be having, but a willingness. Though slender and lean, weighing barely more than seven stone if anything over at all, she is tough at a glance, (over)confident in bearing, and ostensibly scrappy if the need arises.
More adverse to being wet than cold, Faryn's clothing choice is comfortable and practical. Her trousers are wherhide and tempered against the rain, snow and slush of winter. Her jacket, too, with thin spots at the elbows and lined with comfortable but plain wool at the collar and cuffs, is perfectly serviceable for her duties, accented only by the uncomplicated twist of her knot. She keeps her long hair plaited, an action that thins her face and sharpens her features considerably.
WYSK
Beastcrafter, with a penchant for wagers and foul language, an eye for horses of good stock with quality racing traits, and a Tillekian accent thats thick as mud when she's properly invested.
History
Faryn was born in Ista Weyr to then-Weyrsecond Fadra, rider of brown Sulizath. Although she spent her first two Turns at the weyr, in the care of various nursemaids and nannies, by the time she was four she was fostered in her mother's place of origin in Tillek, with her sailor father. She grew up working alongside him and her several half-siblings, and was put on a boat in her formative at the insistence of both her parents, an ordeal which ended abruptly when it became abundantly clear that she was unable to stomach being at sea for any long period of time, despite her best efforts. She was banished and landbound after that, where she dabbled among the master craftsmen of Tillek in an attempt to find her niche. Vintner failed her astoundingly, as did the Healerhall, and eventually it was the Beastcraft that took her in and helped her flourish.
Her formative years were spent in the Beasthall, where she was apprenticed with each of the crafters until it became clear her penchant would lie with the runners and other herdbeasts, a place that was doubly appropriate when she stopped growing at the extremely modest height of five-feet-four. This made her perfect jockey height, a fact that was lost on nobody.
Relationships
Family
- Fadra, brown Sulizath's, retired Weyrsecond at Ista Weyr - Faryn has plenty of hangups over her mother's reputation, but also got a few of her bad traits, specifically gambling and fighting (when the need arises) honestly. Like most kids, she's spent a lot of her life making sure she doesn't become like her mom, but still speaks fondly of her and her dragon when they come up in conversation.
High Reaches
- Edyis - Who doesn't like Ed? That's right, the answer is nobody doesn't, so of course she's grown on Faryn, too. The herder truly sees her as someone to trust and keep there, respects her, and has marked her on the list of someone she'd be glad to call a friend...insofar as Faryn makes friends.
- Farideh - Upwards of ninety percent of the time--down now from ninety-nine--Faryn seems to despise the laundress wholly, and their sniping at one another could provide stories for the ages. It might seem, then, that when they aren't sniping, the end times are nigh; quite the opposite, Faryn seems to have an odd trust in Farideh, one that she wouldn't elaborate on if you asked.
- Jadzia - She's only met Jadzia once, but Faryn's got her sights on the rider now, especially after finding out she used to train runners. She may or may not be holding out hope that Jadzia will race her, or at least provide some company.
- Keysi Not quite sure what to think of Keysi, Faryn's impression thus far is that she's a stick in the mud; she has nothing to prove to her otherwise, and so is likely to treat the healer-turned-Candidate with the courtesy due another craftswoman, but not much else.
- K'zin - A silly bronzerider who has, on occasion, provided company as an activities partner. She appreciates his company and their candid talks,
- Laine - Faryn can see the sweetness beneath Laine's spitfire demeanor, and she appreciates that it's there; regularly, she also regrets that she identifies with it not so much as sweet as foolish.
- Schuyler - He makes good food and always shares, which is a plus; she does, though, wonder at his motives for it; someone that nice has to be hiding something.
- Tomic - Faryn and Tomic have become fast friends, there is no doubt there. When it became clear she was good with horses and kids, and he was willing to indulge her card habit, there was no way it could go any other way. She trusts him the same way the weyrbrats do, except maybe not quite as blindly.
- Quinlys - Faryn only knows Quinlys distantly, half because of rumors regarding her outburst in the living caverns, and half because Quinlys asked her to stand shortly after that event. She declined, politely, mostly for personal reasons, only to accept Search months later when offered by K'zin.
- Zadkiel - Where Faryn's distrust of Igen and their motivations are clear, it is odd that she seems to at least appreciate Zadkiel for what seems to be transparency. She doesn't outright hate the foreign candidate, indeed tolerates him better thus far than she initially did many of her peers, but she does seem to be waiting for something to slip.
