C'stian

Description

C'stian is a young man of average build and above-average height, with short, curly dark hair and a dusting of scruff across his jawline. He has a slightly tanned complexion, though it seems to be his natural skin color rather than the product of any tendency towards outdoor life. His face is slightly narrow and his nose just a bit broad between his brown eyes, but neither excessively so; the overall effect is to make his mouth appear smaller and his lips a bit thin, as if he were constantly just a bit lost in thought. His fingers are often darkened slightly by charcoal dust, particularly the thumb and index finger of his right hand.

WYSK

  • Born Castian at Healer Hall to Journeyman Healer Calia and a dragonrider that she never named.
  • Was a Sr. Apprentice at Healer Hall before he was Searched for Elaruth and Bijedth's fourth clutch.
  • Impressed bronze Liesanth on Day 21 of Month 2, Turn 34, becoming C'stian.
  • Liesanth was the bronze involved in the accident with his clutchsister Ziluyth, causing injuries to both and the loss of an eye to the latter.

History

The son of a Healer named Calia and a dragonrider she once met and had a fling with, Castian was raised at the Healer's Hall surrounded by the tools of his mother's tradecraft. The names of herbs were among his first words, and he learned to draw by trying to copy their pictures out of his mother's books. There was never any question as to what path he would follow, and when he turned twelve he was proud to become an apprentice in the very Hall he had grown up in.

Castian considered healing an important duty to fulfill, and threw himself into his apprenticeship wholeheartedly. His lifelong exposure to the healing arts and his dedicated nature led him to excel academically at his studies, but he fell somewhat short putting them into practice in comparison; a Healer must be able to be dispassionate at times, which has never been Castian's strong suit. Though he tries very hard, he's too emotional under the surface at times.

And then, when he was a Senior Apprentice he was found by a Searchflight sent out by Fort Weyr.

At first, Castian was reluctant to go; yes, it was an honor but it would take him from his studies, and he was not far from becoming a Journeyman Healer. It was only after his mother reminded him it was an important duty--as important as healing, should the Interval end--that he acquiesced. After all, he told himself, his calling was as a healer; perhaps his unnamed father had been a rider, but he was a Healer and it was exceedingly unlikely he would Impress a dragon. He would go and do his duty, make the Healer's Hall and his mother proud, and then inevitably return to his studies.

But at the hatching, one of the dragonets--a newborn bronze--got into a terrible scuffle with his green sister, Ziluyth, as they tried to reach the candidates. Seeing the two hatchlings suffering, Castian had to restrain himself from running across the sands to go to their aid. Even still, he almost took one step forward, staring straight at the injured bronze hatchling, only for the hatchling--Liesanth--to meet his gaze, then stagger over and collapse directly in front of him.

Though caring deeply for his new bronze lifemate, C'stian struggled with the sudden change in his life's trajectory during his first months as a weyrling. His entire life up to that point had seemed to be on one specific path, that of becoming a Healer, and his self-image was still very much bound up in that. At first, he thought of himself more as a Healer who happened to be sharing his head with a dragon than as a rider who was once training as a Healer.

Matters weren't helped by the fact that Liesanth's occasionally headstrong nature initially led C'stian to try to remain calm and controlled at all times; he expended so much effort in trying to keep their personalities from bleeding together that he didn't have much energy left to adapt to weyr life. And so he initially spent a great deal of time questioning whether or not he was meant to bond with Liesanth, or whether his half-step forward to help the injured dragon robbed someone else of their destined lifemate.

When he finally learned to relax and let his bond with Liesanth settle into a sort of equilibrium, he got past some of those doubts and fears, and began to be more convivial (and even occasionally mischievous) with the other weyrlings.

However, he still runs into more than a few moments--such as Liesanth's first chase--where his craft-bred background leaves him a little unbalanced compared to those born or raised in the weyr.
