I'kris

From NorCon MUSH

Description

Dark eyes, dark hair and dusky skin speak to the racial origins of distant relations; so too do the width of his nose and those fine, slender lips that give him such an appealing smile. I'kris has yet to grow out of his teenage lankiness, but weyrlinghood has given him broad shoulders and muscles, and rather more poise than he once had. His hair is growing out, now, enough so that he can style it into spikes... but only when there's no duty to call.

I'kris wears his heavy riding trousers low on his hips, belted securely into place; beneath his riding jacket, his shirt is frequently unbuttoned low. His knot suggests he's still a weyrling - Monaco Weyr, brown dragon.

WYSK

  • Monaco brownrider, currently on loan to High Reaches after his Svissath caught Rielsath.
  • It's no secret that his sister is Mirinda, Junior Weyrwoman at Monaco, that his father is a Wingleader, and that his grandmother was a Senior Weyrwoman in her day. They're an old Monaco family - upright, traditional, and proud.
  • Which must make it a little awkward that I'kris Impressed /brown/ and not bronze.

History

I'kris' family has been intertwined with the leadership of Monaco Weyr for generations: they've produced Weyrwomen, Weyrleaders, Wingleaders, even the occasional Headwoman. I'kris, born Indakris, is the son of M'kris and Indalys - a Wingleader and a former Candidate whose lineage is august in the Holder sense - and knew from childhood what his responsibility would be. If his father was not a hands-on kind of father in the general, day-to-day life they lived, he was certainly nonetheless very present: young Kris would never be able to forgot that his family was important, and that his father expected great things. The same was true for his sister Mirinda, three turns older than him, but perhaps in a lesser way: there were only so many queens she might Impress in these Interval days, whereas Kris' bronze might hatch at any time.

Mirinda was still only fifteen when Evielth laid a queen egg, which was younger than her mother might have preferred. Still, there was no way to guarantee she'd ever have another chance, so on to the sands she went. Kris was too young, of course, but he was in the galleries when Mirinda Impressed her Zaisavyth - and when the pressures on him got heavier still. Wouldn't it be a coup for M'kris if both of his children Impressed metallic dragons? True, they could not both lead the Weyr, but they could be at the top!

Zaisavyth was four turns old before she rose for her maiden flight, and hers was the first flight since the one she'd hatched at. It was Interval, and this was not terribly surprising, but it made for long, anxious turns for Kris, who was eager for the pressure to be off. M'kris couldn't have been more proud when Zaisavyth laid a gold egg, though that pleasure turned sour when the negotiations were made for that egg to be given to High Reaches. M'kris was not precisely quiet about his distaste for the exile queen at High Reaches, and he could certainly see the reasoning behind the move... but it hurt.

It hurt worse when one of the High Reaches girls Impressed Zaisavyth's golden egg, but not as much as it hurt when Indakris - I'kris - Impressed not bronze, but /brown/.

And I'kris? He loved his Svissath, but he was devastated at his failure. How, now, could he prove himself to his distant but much-admired father? How could he be useful?
