Description
Plump and short, her figure veers closer to that of an overindulged child than a budding woman with not a muscle in sight and more than a little spare skin to pinch her cheeks. Within an awkwardly lumpy face, her nose downturns bashfully, perhaps shamed by the oversize of boring brown eyes and the wide mouth. Dimples poke out of her hidden bone structure and her cheeks redden with alternating oil and irritation. Mostly flat eyebrows are much too thick, lending no favor to her eyes' roundness. Parted straight up the top of her head, dirty blond hair tumbles in unruly frizzes, unmistakeably tangled and left to fend for itself past her shoulders. She dresses in fevered layers, shapeless, and as if chosen by someone blind to color.
History
Last born of the honorable Esmond and his young blushing wife Sunnifa, Esther's position was that of a gem - a precious, coveted thing to be doted upon and then winsomely married. Her disposition was something else entirely. Against a backdrop of a youthful mother and two handsome sisters, Esther stood out like a sore thumb. Dumpy and ill-mannered, her infancy was riddled with difficulty and question. As she grew up, she became aware of the stares of subconscious disdain afforded her, even if, as a child, she wasn't quite sure what it was she was sensing. Accordingly, Esther sought comfort in the actions of her willful half-brother Oswine. However, when she acted out as he did, she was far more deeply punished. Sunnifa, knowing her own children would never inherit the grand Hold, put all of her will and want into having perfect daughters. Esther was not working out.
When she was 18, the eldest Monet was courted and married to a distinguished vintner who spent most of his time lodging with the family in Greystones proper for his work. At 17, Dorothea won the favor of an expert runner-breeder who gifted the family with much of his best stock. At 13, Esther got very, very drunk. She woke up, upside-down, in the stores and witnessed Oswine having a private chat with Monet's vintner husband, Bennet.
Three turns passed with this topsy-turvy status quo, with Dorothea passing through several possible marriages, Oswine a tempting bachelor, and Esther -- Esther. She was kept around because she was family, and family meant everything, and she drank for much the same reasons. Drank, and ate, and grew in figure and not status. It met its head at a festive autumn Gather, with Dorothea's newest Bitran interest in attendance. Esther arrived late, muddled with drink, and her mouth running as freely as the wine. It's said she accused her half-brother of perverse acts, or maybe her sister of stepping out with her husband's vintner apprentice, and then possibly made advances on Dorothea's suitor. The aftermath is better cataloged: Esther had suffered 'stress' from a recent runner accident and was going to stay out in the country with distant relatives to better herself.
Away from the stifling effect of family and attention, Esther both blossomed and stagnated. Eventually, after months of moping and being prodded with a stick by hold children, she apprenticed with the midwife, learning earthier skills than she'd ever been exposed to. Through her five month learning process, an idea began to bloom. Maybe there was a real, solid, reason she was nothing like the rest of her family. Maybe someone else shared in the mistake that was Esther. She thought that maybe she had been switched at birth. There was no better explanation than that. It took her another month to track down her old midwife and nanny, since retired, and then convince Dorothea to help her visit home so she could nab the Hold's birthing records. She was rewarded with the knowledge that three other children had been born on the same day as her. One was tracked down and marked off within Benden's surroundings: she was dark-skinned and clearly her parents' daughter. The second would require a bit more travel.
