Description

J'sae must have both patience and mindfulness for the little details in life, else his floppy brown hair would be in haphazard chaos instead of the coiffed precision that gives it an upward swoop. Curiosity dwells in his hazel eyes, as if each new sight is a puzzle to be solved, while his mouth favors a slight, close-lipped smile as though to keep his own mysteries locked behind it. Perhaps he doesn't mean to be an enigma, though; perhaps it's simple shyness, judging by the curve of his slender shoulders and the carriage of his pale, unassuming frame.

His clothing is as neat as his hair; a mother could be proud. His shirts are largely of a button up style that allow for easy sleeve-rolling and securing with hidden loops hooked over buttons just above the elbow, though often covered over by sweaters in the appropriate season. His many-pocketed cargo pants are eminently practical for whatever tasks face the day. Though the khakis and creams that he favors in his dress are rather plain, they are sometimes complemented by embroidered patterns in of deeper, bolder color. His custom-fit riding leathers are similarly colored - khaki and soft brown paired together and dotted with embroidery orange as accent. His footwear varies from boots to simple sandals.

Darkness embraces the sleek, slender form of this blue. Light reveals a striking, secret beauty in the pooled inky blue, pulling prismatic highlights and undertones throughout the darkness of his hide. In just the right light, he might seem to glitter; though not crystalline, movement in light breathes vibrancy and a certain grandeur to the rainbow splotches that peek through the blue lens, particularly dazzling across the slightly iridescent thin membrane of wingsail and stronger in shade across the spiky lines of his maw, headknobs and neckridges. His deep-set eyes are lined with midnight, though the colors within his bejewelled gaze exceptionally vivid. His talons are pale as bleached bone, adding yet one more contrast to the many that make up this blue.

Just Any Other Egg

It's white. Boring, plain white. There are no fancy textures, no swaths of color and certainly no gold anywhere on this shell. Even its size is unremarkable; on the small side and regularly shaped. Are you yawning yet?

Just Any Other Egg hatches with a sudden burst of flying shell. Whatever tremors might have come before, they must have been too small to take notice. As egg shell and goo go flying, flung wide across the sands as inky iridescent wings are flung wide in follow through of the body-wrenching motion that must have freed him from his prison.

History

Life at Citrus Grove Hold is simple. The holding itself isn't more than a handful of orchards and a small collection of buildings that belong as much to the orchard hands that work there as to the holding family itself. They're some of the most minor of the minor holders and with that there's a certain casual feeling that creates community in that sort of life, especially on the southern continent and fairly far from Southern Hold that they're beholden to. Holder Jasevan and his wife, Taerys, don't stand on ceremony and their six children grew up working and playing in the orchards along with the handful of other children spawned from the other residents. It wasn't always easy, but it was a happy life. Wake, work, lessons, work, play. Harvest times were hardest, Jasetaerys, the fourth son, would later recall, but only because they were busy from dawn til dusk and some days even later.

As the fourth son, (Little) Jase had no expectation of managing the family business someday, so he had no shame about cultivating interests beyond the citrus groves, or rather /in them/. The wood of some of the trees provided endless hours of entertainment for the artistic lad. It was slow going, teaching himself, but Jase had a natural talent for turning his imaginings into wooden works of art. When his interest and inclination was noted by his father, gifts of books on wood-carving helped him make progress.

At twelve, Jase wanted to apprentice. None of his other brothers had left the holding and his father was reluctant to let Jase go. Seeing his talent progress in spite of the lack of formal instruction, eventually Big Jase arranged the apprenticeship and Jase arrived at the Hall when he was thirteen.

Even as an apprentice, Jase had an avid love of books and seemingly endless patience for practice, if perhaps ideas that were less practical than they were fanciful, but that's what the ornamental carpentry specialty is for, isn't it? His early designs for puzzle boxes, reed instruments, and whittled avians were more than promising and paired with his obvious dedication to the craft earned him friends among those journeymen eager to share their knowledge with someone passionate and apt.

Natural talent only takes a person so far, but Jase's hard work took him the extra distance to catch up with peers who had apprenticed a turn sooner and saw him proudly walking the tables at twenty-two. He was eager to accept his first posting to Ista Weyr, eager to work with the jungle woods in abundance there. Of course, most of his work was more practical than ornamental, using the foundations of carpentry and papermaking taught at the Hall to make himself worthy of the posting at the Weyr.

Eager to see his first hatching in turn 37, Jase had sat in the front row of the galleries and that had, perhaps, made all the difference. There was no way to predict that, with his decided flare for the dramatic, Scintillating Sapience Blue Zajeth would strike a pose and throw his rainbow regard squarely on the woodcrafting journeyman. Surprise made J'sae's stumble down to the sands more embarrassing than remarkable. There were enough witnesses, however, that the anger the Hall had for losing one of their most promising journeymen was short-lived (toward Jase himself, at any rate). He hadn't chosen to leave his craft, after all.

Nearly two turns in Ista gave the pair enough time to train up and practice. It was, in fact, through a colleague at the Hall who turned J'sae's attention on High Reaches' Tundra wing and the efforts that were being made there to enable riders to continue in their craft. For all that Zajeth would miss the tropical beauty of Ista, the restless blue was willing to make a change to give his lifemate a chance at the closest thing he might ever have to the life he wanted: a crafter's life. J'sae's transfer to High Reaches Weyr had him wearing a Tundra badge the day he arrived. There can be little doubt that the former WoodCrafter intends to be a part of the Weyr's experiment: how much a part, remains to be seen.
