She's the color of the ocean in midwinter, all fathomless depths and dark, wavering shadows; no shallows, here, and no sun-dappled waves. Seaweed-like, the spikes of her neckridges are uneven and yet still graceful, their sloping lines a map of their own making towards the anchor-like weight of her tail. Her wings are darker still, a murky green-black that, if she holds them just right, catches the light as if to reveal long-hidden secrets; a nightmare lost far beneath the briny waves.

Private Impression Message

A moment ago, there was nothing but sweat and anticipation and the sensation of heat radiating up from the ground beneath your feet. Now, it's as if Luishaeth has always been here, making herself at home with salt and with sea. Water pools beneath you, buoying you even as it threatens to capsize... capsize and drown. Her grip is upon you now, and you may never break free from it.« Did you know what it was you wished for, Pia? Could you even imagine. Can you, even now? » She lets it hang, lets you drown in the acerbity of her tongue. « Stop gaping. I need to eat. »

Temperament

Grouchy, bad-tempered and often cryptic, Luishaeth considers herself smarter than most people, and certainly not terribly inclined to follow their rules. She's not very good at being a weyrling... weyrling rules chafe, and there's no room for her acerbic wit in strict lesson structures and plans.

She's not much for physical pursuits, though she takes to the water as if she were born to it. Others can have their flight; she has her oceans, their tides, their seaweed-draped wake. Salt-water, though; not fresh. The lake, the hot springs... they have little appeal for your sea-born green, and though she'll consent to bathe when she needs to, she'll never be one for soaking.

In the sea, she's at home. Above the sea, too, if that's what is required. Your plans for mapping the islands meet her approval, though she's never wholly obvious about that (or anything). Half the time, she can do nothing but criticise you; the other half... well. Sometimes you can just tell that she's proud, that she's willing to let down her guard and acknowledge it.

She rises infrequently and without warning, her moods seemingly capricious although you, Pia, may guess that there's always some method to her madness. They'll be short flights, a mere flurry of wingbeats and no blooding to be had; she won't linger afterwards, either, and if she remembers her mates from one moon cycle to the next, that's her business and no one else's.

She has secrets. She does not lie, no more than any dragon, but she will obfuscate as necessary.

She's not what you expected, Pia. Whether she's better-- or worse-- remains up to you. She's yours, though, for better or for worse, in calm seas and storm.

Inspiration

Luishaeth was inspired by The Luidaeg from Seanan McGuire's October Daye series. She's the Sea Witch-- mother of the Roane, older than sin, grumpy as hell.

The third of three children in a family of starsmiths, it's arguable that Pia never stood much of a chance: it was inevitable, surely, that she'd end up following in their footsteps. She'd argue that that was never that case-- that she'd always known it wasn't the stars that interested her, and that she'd considered other crafts as a result, and even been encouraged to do so. It wasn't until she was eleven that a chance encounter in the Crafthall that was the only home she'd ever known led her to discover her passion: cartography.

Maps! She could study them for hours, caught up in intricate details... frustrated by what felt like inconsistencies between the various versions she found in the hall's archives. At twelve, she formally apprenticed, and though she dutifully worked her way through the general starsmith curriculum, it was always obvious that she would specialise as soon as she was in a position to do so.

At nineteen, she was sent to the Seacraft at Tillek, where it was expected she would finish out her apprenticeship working with them on their charts and maps. While it was satisfying work, it was also frustrating; she wanted to go out and remap everything... and do it now. Logically, she knew it was more complicated than that-- knew that maps meant ships, and ships meant crews, and all of that meant time and resources. But. But.

Not much of a sailor to begin with, she found the whole process painfully slow, and irritatingly political.

Still, she excelled at the work, and surprised no one by walking the tables to Journeyman half way through her twentieth turn. The Hall elected to keep her at the Seacraft, and that was... well, fine, mostly, though her feet itched and her frustrations grew.

At the end of Turn 38, however, a chance meeting with Edyis of High Reaches Weyr resulted in new opportunities: the chance to use dragons to ease her work, and, perhaps, to Impress one of her own. On the first day of Turn 39, Pia arrived at High Reaches bearing a candidate's knot.

Two sevendays later, Pia walked out onto the sands with her fellow candidates and found herself face-to-face with Midwinter Seas Green Luishaeth.
