Prologue
Description
Dark blonde hair, dirty some would call it, is braided in two lines and then coiled up at the nape of Iolene's neck. Very few strands escape to frame her thin, cagey face. Narrowed dark blue eyes are framed by a set of long lashes, a gracious feminine oddity midst sun and salty-sea worn features. Built lithe, a hunter's stance and grace is held in the tall girl's stature, her body holding few curves, though toned muscles carry throughout. New-to-her clothing attires her thin body in the form of a pretty, V-cut light blue tunic that's tightened at the waist by a cleverly designed ribbon, sewn in a loop beneath the surface itself. A pair of black soft leather pants are a little big along her skinny legs, but still look sights better than what she arrived in. She still favors bare feet unless she absolutely has to, and so her feet are still bruised, calloused, and a little purple about the edges. Background
Iolene was raised by her grandparents, who were in turn the descendants of Ioni, a minor holder's wife of High Reaches Hold. Ioni became the defacto Headwoman due to her 'can do' and 'must do' nature, and stepped up while others faltered in their new surroundings.
Iolene barely remembers her parents, being only four when they died in one of the early Comet Pass falls.
Sometime before her sixteenth birthday, the islanders were rescued by the riders of High Reaches Weyr and her life began anew. Adjustment to her new (confined) home didn't come easy to the island-bred girl and after a rather emotional period, she ended up standing on the sands at High Reaches, and Impressing to Sun and Stars Gold Ysavaeth.
Since then, her life has been marked by various trials, disappointments, and joys and while her dragon may have her own ambitious agenda, Iolene somehow manages to have none of her own. Supposedly.
Relationships
- Devaki, friend, confidante, brother (?). There was a time when I would lay my life in your hands and now, I can hardly look at you for the things I suspect and just don't want to know. Ignorance is better sometimes.
- Riorde, friend. I disappoint you, I'm sure. But it's ok, because you disappoint me too, but I hope you never know that. I love you, even if what you've become and are becoming sometimes scares me. I wish life on the main land were as simple as that on the island.
- E'gin, comrade (?). I wish you could see past the narrow scope of your ideas and find a world that's so much bigger than the confinements you place on yourself. We could make the world shine if you don't play by their rules.
- K'del, someone. Someone. Someone special. Someone I wish... Blood stains your hands as it must Devaki's. And yet, you're so stable, so solid, and so kind. You, of all the people in my life, have no expectations of me and it's liberating.
- Tiriana, banished. Ysavaeth's hand is all over this, but I'd lie if I didn't say I was complicit as well. Good riddance.
- Lujayn, promoted. I don't know where you fall in all this. Whether you're with them or us or what you will do.
- Brieli, confidante. There's something about you that's attractive. I trust you implicitly and it sometimes scares me as to how quickly that happened and as to why. Maybe it's because we're both outsiders, looking into a world we long to be a part of and yet don't.
- Azaylia, split. How can you be anything but split right now, with the dragon you've Impressed and the person I've known you to be, at least from afar. They say dragons find what suits them best and sometimes I'm afraid of what that really means with you. Who are you that Hraedhyth would find you? What does it say about Ysavaeth finding me?
- Issedi, envied. I envy you. Your life is simple. But you must really be a stupid girl to not see things in front of you. Maybe you're just my mirror and I'm really the stupid one.
Soundtrack
- The Band Perry - If I Die Young
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses,
Sink me in the river, at dawn,
Send me away with the words of a love song.
Life ain't always what you think it out to be.
The sharp knife of a short life
Well, I've had just enough time.
- The Hanging Tree (fan arrangement)
Are you, are you?
Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run, so we'd both be free?
- Tangled/Mandy Moore - When Will My Life Begin
And I'll keep wanderin' and wanderin'
And wanderin' and wonderin'
When will my life begin?
- Tangled - I See the Light
And at last I see the light
And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
- Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe
Hey, I just met you
And this is crazy!
But here's my number,
So call me maybe!
- Spring Awakening - The Song of Purple Summer
And yet, I wait
The swallow brings
A song to hard to follow
That no one else can sing.
And all shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of purple summer.
