Description

Curly, short-cropped hair the colour of warm toffee shades K'del's handsome face, matched in the light fuzz upon his narrowly pointed chin, and the long eyelashes that surround his baby-blue eyes. His features are delicate, almost pretty; he avoids outright prettiness in part thanks to the faded acne scars that line the high-boned cheeks of his fair-skined face. Slenderly muscular, and standing several inches above six foot tall, he carries himself with the confidence and comfort of one older than his turns, a nonchalant swagger marking his step.

• High Reaches Weyrleader between Day 11, Month 6, Turn 19 (his seventeenth turnday) and Day 28, Month 2, Turn 30, when he resigned his knot following Iolene's murder. Cadejoth caught Iovniath for the seniorship three times, and Ysavaeth once. His tenure was rocky; his relationship with Tiriana was never a solid one, and it was at his instigation that she was removed from High Reaches in turn 28. Although he and Iolene were lovers, their shared leadership remained difficult due to heavy differences of opinion and outlook.

• He's apparently originally from a Vinehold in the Tillek area, where he is the second youngest of nine, and the seventh son. He came to the weyr at fifteen, in turn 17, and Impressed Cadejoth a few months later.

• Any number of weyr women can claim to have been in bed with him, though in more recent turns, he has been both more discreet and more discerning. He and former Headwoman Milani carried on a more serious, if non-exclusive, relationship for many turns, which ended quietly in early turn 28. They have a son together (Nikalas, b. Day 25, Month 9, Turn 23). K'del also has another son, Kasey, with Greenrider Avey (b. Month 7, Turn 23). After Cadejoth caught Ysavaeth in her maiden flight, K'del and Iolene became casual lovers. A pregnancy followed, but tragically ended in miscarriage in early month three, turn 29. The relationship ended when Iolene was murdered in turn 30.

• Those who have known him since his arrival at the weyr will remember him as being outspoken on the subject of himself and supremely confident, though this seems to have been tempered in the wake of his ascent to the Weyrleadership. He is, otherwise, relatively outgoing and inclined to being charming, and boasts a wide circle of friends.

History

Kasadel hails from a cothold not far from Tillek, where his parents and siblings raise grapes that eventually become Tillek red. He had a happy, busy childhood: with six brothers and two sisters, 'quiet' was not a term well-used to describe the family home. Even from an early age, however, Kas was eager to prove himself - with so many older siblings, all successful in their own ways, it was hard for the (second) youngest to stand out as anything but the baby.

As adulthood approached, he could see more and more clearly that if he wanted to be more than just another grape grower, his place could not always be within the bosom of his family, no matter how comfortable he found the relationship. With so many brothers, inheritance of the vines was clearly not his lot, but nor did he particularly take to the idea of working forever beneath his eldest brother.

Thus, soon after his fifteenth turnday, Kasadel finally made the decision to leave home, and find some way that he could prove himself as much as any of his brothers with their crafts, holds, and marriages. Somewhere, he was sure, there was a life more suited to his tastes: beer instead of wine, and perhaps employment with more immediate payoff than the long-term, painstaking development of the vine. He made his way first to Tillek, briefly enjoying employment crushing grapes, but jumped at the chance of going further, to the weyr, accompanying the tithe, where he hoped opportunity might present itself.

Mere sevendays after his arrival at the Weyr, Kasadel was Searched for Rielsath and Malsaeth's clutch, and went on to Impress bronze Cadejoth - opportunity enough for anyone. He had only been graduated six months when his ambitions got turned on their head, when, on his seventeenth turnday, Cadejoth caught senior queen Iovniath, and thrust K'del into the position of Weyrleader.

His tenure, since then, has been rocky - as has his relationship with Tiriana. That particular relationship combusted entirely at the end of Turn 28, when K'del successfully had her banished from High Reaches for being too unstable to be Weyrwoman.

Only a handful of months later, Ysavaeth rose - for the second time within the space of a turn, surprising everyone - while K'del and Iolene were enjoying a beach retreat, leaving Cadejoth her only suitor. Thus, despite earlier assurances to the weyr council that he would not be maintaining his position, K'del found himself Weyrleader once again - and this time with Iolene, his lover, at his side. It might have been perfect, were it not for Iolene's unorthodox ideas, and (from his perspective) her inability to understand how and why a Weyr works the way it does.

All of that ended at the end of the second month of turn 30, when Iolene was murdered. K'del resigned his knot almost immediately, and departed the Weyr in his grief. It remains to be seen if he will return.

Relationships

• K'del and Milani were lovers for nearly ten turns, starting very casually and turning into something more (albeit non-exclusive) in later turns. The relationship waned over time, and eventually ended, very quietly, in early turn 28. They have one child together - a son, Nikalas.
• K'del had a difficult relationship with Tiriana, despite being her Weyrleader for nine and a half turns; he spent most of that time hoping she would learn to respect him, until giving up entirely and having her banished instead. They haven't seen each other since.
• K'del always found Iolene strangely entrancing. Originally, he saw her as a little sister, and felt inclined to protect her; it was only much later that he began to see her as a woman, largely as a result of Ysavaeth's influence. After Ysavaeth's maiden flight in month nine of turn twenty-eight, he and Iolene became lovers. The goldrider miscarried his child in month three, turn 29. Ysavaeth's second flight made K'del Weyrleader once again, and this created tension in the relationship that continued right up to Iolene's death in turn 30.
• K'del was surprised by Azaylia's warmth towards him; he's pretty proud that he's managed to make her respect him that much. Now that she has Impressed, he's pretty hopeful for the future: he believes she's going to do well for High Reaches.
• Brieli is someone K'del can't quite understand. It's increasingly obvious to him that they don't really get along, but he can't quite work out why - it doesn't seem to be the same as his earlier issues with Tiriana, but something nonetheless seems to set things on edge between them.
• Val has been a friend of K'del's for some turns now, and he's glad she eventually did decide to transfer to High Reaches. She's good for a laugh, but also for more serious conversations: she keeps him from overthinking, too.
• K'del finds Ali both impressive and frustrating, sometimes at the same time. Their friendship has had some ups and downs - especially after she lied to him in order to achieve what she wanted for her Weyr - but he appreciates that they can be friends despite that.
• Taikrin is trouble. So is Riorde. So is Devaki.
